STROKING CATEGORIES
Welcome
to the Stroking Categories section of the Clarity-NOW World
Center. In this section you will find a broad-based discussion of the
concept of stroking - one of the most important concepts contained in
the general body of TA knowledge, as well as
a description of the various kinds of stroking we all engage in.
You will also find a description of how each
kind of stroking we receive when we are young influences the life script we write for ourselves,
including the way each influences the manner in which we structure our
time and organize our lives as we grow older.
Of all TA's basic concepts, the concept of
stroking is the one that our culture seems to have absorbed most
thoroughly over the past several decades. Yet even though many
people understand what stroking means in a general sense (that is, they
realize that a hug or a compliment is considered a "stroke"), few people
recognize the extraordinary influence that our need for strokes early in
life exerts on the way we relate to people later in life.
In particular, few people realize that, as we
grow up, we actively structure our time so that we can continue to get
strokes in the same way we received them when we were younger (perhaps
by pleasing people and trying to live up to other people's expectations,
perhaps by stroking ourselves for "working hard" and living up
to our own expectations of ourselves, or perhaps by setting ourselves up
to receive put-downs or insults, unconsciously seeking negative strokes
in the same way we received them when we were younger).
This section of the Clarity-NOW World Center
is divided into seven additional sub-sections, each of which describes a
separate aspect of the concept of stroking. In most cases, the
text in the sub-section has been excerpted from Jut Meininger's new book
CLARITY, which contains longer and more detailed descriptions.

sub-section.
